History of Dwarka
The Timeless City of Lord Krishna
Dwarka: A Sacred City Beyond Time
Dwarka, meaning “Gateway to the Divine”, is one of the oldest and holiest cities in India. Revered as the capital of Lord Shri Krishna’s kingdom, it holds a unique place in the hearts of millions of devotees and seekers of truth. Located on the western coast of Gujarat, where the Gomti River meets the Arabian Sea, Dwarka is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and is celebrated as a Divya Desham in Vaishnavite tradition.
The Golden City Built by the Divine Architect
According to ancient scriptures like the Mahabharata, Harivamsa, and Skanda Purana, Dwarka was built by Lord Vishwakarma, the celestial architect, at the command of Lord Krishna. After leaving Mathura to protect the Yadavas from constant warfare, Krishna reclaimed land from the sea and established the majestic Swarnadwarika (Golden Dwarka)—a city so grand that its streets were said to shine with gems.
The Submersion of Dwarka: From Land to Legend
After Lord Krishna completed his divine mission and departed from the world, the city of Dwarka is believed to have submerged into the sea, as prophesied. This myth remained just a legend until underwater archaeological explorations off the coast of modern Dwarka revealed ruins, walls, stone anchors, and grids—pointing toward an ancient submerged city beneath the waves. These discoveries continue to inspire researchers and devotees alike, confirming that faith and history often meet beneath the surface.
The Dwarkadhish Temple: A Testament Through Ages
The present-day Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as Jagat Mandir, is a 5-storied structure supported by 72 intricately carved pillars. Rebuilt and renovated multiple times—especially after its destruction by Mahmud Begada in the 15th century—the temple stands tall as a spiritual beacon for Hindus across the globe. The temple's flag, which flies high atop its spire, is changed five times a day and is believed to carry the blessings of Lord Krishna himself.
Scriptural Significance
Dwarka is mentioned extensively in sacred texts:
-
Mahabharata describes Krishna’s life and rule in Dwarka.
-
Skanda Purana narrates the founding and grandeur of Dwarka.
-
Bhagavata Purana speaks of the Lord’s divine activities here.
-
Matsya Purana and Vishnu Purana refer to its creation and final submersion.
Pilgrimage and Eternal Relevance
Today, Dwarka remains a living spiritual center, drawing pilgrims from all corners of the world. From the sacred Gomti Ghat and Rukmini Devi Temple to the Sudama Setu, every step in Dwarka echoes with Krishna’s eternal leela. It is not just a city—it is a gateway into sacred time, where history, mythology, and devotion become one.
Jai Dwarka Campaign: Reviving the Spirit of a Lost Civilization
Through the Jai Dwarka Campaign, we strive to reconnect the world with the ancient wisdom, spiritual richness, and historical glory of Dwarka. By preserving its sacred relics, supporting archaeological exploration, and encouraging devotional experiences like Shri Krishna Jala Japa Deeksha, we honor the legacy of India’s sunken spiritual treasure.
“As long as the waves touch the shores of Dwarka, Krishna’s presence shall never fade.”
